Default Thoughts on CC Sabathia to the Brewers

What do all you POFers (that actually follow baseball that is) think of Sabathia going to the Brewers?

As a Brewer fan I love it. I was already looking forward to the second half of the season due to the high amount of home games (thanks to the fewest home games in the majors over the first half). Everyone seems to be putting it together except for maybe Rickie Weeks so I figured with the nice schedule they could make a solid push against the Cubs and now with Sabathia, Sheets, and Parra and Bush pitching well they might be considered favorites to win the division.

What do you baseball fans think, there last pennant was 6 months before I was born, could we be seeing another one?

I think it gives them a chance to win the division. They might have enough pitching to keep up with the cubs assuming that the Cubs don't get that one dude from the A's. The move is a last ditch effort to reach the playoffs. Ben Sheets will be gone at the end of the season and so will CC. Its now or never for the Brewers.

I don't totally agree with this statement -Brewers owner Attanasio has showed a willingness to use the checkbook- although I do think that they better show some kind of payoff for this move, i.e, trading a top future prospect for a "right now" guy; the farm system is primarily how the Brewers have gotten to this point...I suppose the Indians felt they weren't going to be able to resign Sabathia, so they got what they could.

This reminds me of the Mariners trading Randy Johnson to Houston in the final year of his contract; the 'Stros got a "right now" guy, and did make the playoffs-and merely making the playoffs would be HUGE here in the City of Festivals, being that the Bucks and Marquette are yet again big question marks for next year, as are the Packers...this could be the Brewers big chance to become Wisconsin's second favorite sports team again.

I do agree to some extent that it's a now or never move but I don't see it as a World Series or bust scenario. They do have a good young core of players and some decent young pitching.

Plus I don't agree with the common notion that Sheets and Sabathia are gone after this season. I do think it's very unlikely to bring both back especially if they both expect to be paid in the Johan Santana range but I think it's feasible to bring at least one back. I mean Gagne is pulling in $10mil a year, Sheets $9 something mil a year, take those two contracts off the books, combine that with Mark Attanasio raising the payroll year by year and Santana money for at least one of them is feasible.

Well they will get first round picks if Sheets or Sabathia leave via free agency(2 each I believe). Plus La Porta was blocked in the system by Hart, Braun, and Fielder and to some extent so was Green by Matt Gamel (if Green is the player to be named later). So ya I do think they need to show some kind of payoff (i.e. a World Series would be nice) being he's a supreme talent but being he's ultimately expendable due to there not being an available position for him those extra picks may be enough for me.
