This test is designed to measure how quickly a patient is able to fall sleep and what stage of sleep they go into.
* An MSLT involves the patient spending the day in the sleep lab and is usually preceded by overnight polysomnography.
* Starting 1.5 to 2 hours after getting out of bed, the patient lies down in a darkened bedroom wearing normal daytime clothing and is asked to try to sleep. These 20-minute nap opportunities are repeated at 2 hour intervals throughout the day. In between tests, the patients do not stay in the bedroom but have access to a dayroom. The patient is given lunch but no caffeine is permitted throughout the day.
*Physiological measurements are taken from the eye and chin muscles and the brain using electrodes. The electrodes are all plugged into a box, which feeds signals into a computer. These signals are manually scored and then reported by a sleep physiologist.
Any suggestions?
