I have suffered from sleep apnea and it's awful. Two of the possible causes are being overweight and alcohol so if any of these apply then perhaps deal with that first. That said, I suffered from this when very young and skinny and before I was old enough to drink. I used to dream I was underwater and drowning, struggling to get to the top for air or that my tongue was stuck to the roof of my mouth and would let air through.

The only times I seem to get this now though is if I've had a drinking spell (eg a holiday) or if I've put on weight (eg a holiday).

Hi,

Today there are several that are easily available which may reduce and control snoring habit and one of these is the so called electronic bracelet. This device is said to be the cheapest and the most effective remedy for sleep apnea disorder. It can be worn on the arms which reduces the snoring sound that comes from the air packages.

Have you had a sleep test? They can determine what is going on in your sleep. The usual solution is a CPAP machine. Basically what happens (unless you have rare condition where your brain doesn't tell your body to breath) is the muscles in the throat over relax and collapse in on each other, closing the airway. The machine uses air to keep the passage open.

Depending on your situation, you may be able to do what I did. I refuse to spend the next half of my like sleeping hooked up to a machine. I did some research, talked to my doctor and I don't have a problem anymore. I started exersizing, lost some weight and got in shape. That does help, extra fat in the neck (it doesn't take much) makes it harder to keep the air passage open. I also visited a speach therapist and got exersizes to strengthen my soft palet. I actually did this to treat another condition but there is only one set of muscles in the throat and palet. Trained and strengthened right, they will work better to keep your air passage open at night.

I had to find this out for myself and when I asked the ENT about it, he agreed that the combination of weight loss and soft palet exersizes would probably resolve the apnea. When asked why he hadn't suggested it, he replied that,"No one would do it." WT?? Of course they won't do it, if they don't know about it!

People do have different throat structure and causes for apnea but why not look into this? At the very least it won't do you any harm and may help your general health. It did take care of the problem for me.

Bummer you don't have the 5 min edit feature here so I can fix my creative spelling.
