Default night time wakings

My baby has his nighttime routine which works great and he falls asleep easy and we put him in his bassinet and everything is just fine...for about the first hour. Then he wakes up screaming. He is 3 months old. Usually when he wakes up it starts with some kicks and wiggles and then a wine and then a cry and so on but at night and only for bedtime he wakes up all of a sudden with a big loud cry. Every night he does this, every night! It is driving me and my husband insane. We can't put him to bed and then go to bed ourselves because we have to wait up for at least an hour or two for him to do his little nighttime wakings. What is he doing? Why is he doing it and how do we stop it?
