Default What tests should a doctor use to rule out an infection of the prostate and bladder?

I have to have a Cystoscopy because of UTI's. My doctor told me that if I have an infection in my prostate or bladder I shouldn't have a Cystoscopy because it will worsen my condition. The only tests that were done was a urine culture. What other test are their?

Hi David - just regarding bladder infections, urine sample is quick simple test to determine whether an infection is present , antibiotics are then prescribed.

For persistant bladder infections or if anthing else is suspected the next step is cystoscopy ...either with or without sedation . Generally for a man , this takes place under light sedation , to have a little look if there is any blockages, inflammation , signs of infection ect . Urethral dilation , painless when the is a "furring" up of the urethra or narrowing of the tube making urination painful, difficult or in emergency not being able to pass water , in which case the male should go straight away to A and E department , where a catheta would be fitted and futher investigations would take place .

You say in your comment, that you *have* to have a cystoscopy, then in further comment your dr saiid you |*shouldnt* if you have infection in bladder or prostrate, its not advisable and usually does *not* happen that a cystoscopy takes place while you are suffering from a *urine* infection antibiotics should be given as soon as possible to clear that ...i presume you have also had a test to see if you are diabetic . If urine problems are ongoing then usually a cystoscopy or your having difficulty passing water .

One of the reasons is, it is a little more difficult to do this investigation on a male as the urethra , the tube is longer and twisting ect in females its much easier and can be done with or without sedation .

Regarding the prostrate further investigations i imagine CT ,iv xrays ect .

Do hope you feel better soon

Regards

Cathy
