Default Is gym a place to meet?

This topic has been touched upon in other threads, but I thought it deserved more attention. At least I am curious as to others experiences and observations.

The gym is a great place to meet someone.

If I only had a nickel for every time I have heard that line. But is it true?

In the three years I have been going to the gym, I have spent many hours observing my fellow gym mates. I can only recall two incidents in all that time in which it appeared a guy just went up and started talking with some chick. They talked for five or ten minutes and then went their own way. (did anything come of it? I don't know) On a side note, I also once saw and heard two guys exchange loud and unpleasant comments over some simple mis-understanding (and no, it wasn't a gay hitting on a straight).

What do you guys think? Have you ever met someone at they gym? Have you ever observed a guy or possibly a chick strike up a conversation with a stranger?
