Default Do any of you guys actually do yoga?

I am sort of interested in trying it out.
How did you get started and are the classes (if you took any) worth it?

It seems like it would have some great benefits.

I have been doing it twice a week for the last 9 years. At the time I was 56 and I learned that, for me, I did much better if I limited my lifting to two days a week vice three. Toss in two days of cardio along with the Yoga, and my compulsive itch to work out gets satisfied.

I started out using instructional tapes but now have the routine memorized, so I just put on classical music and go with it. Rodney Lee puts out several good tapes. My wife used tapes for several years, but enjoys going to a regular class with an instructor. Either way, Yoga adds a somewhat different dimension to an overall fitness program. It is not a substitute for strength training or cardio; it contributes to your flexibility, sense of balance, structural alignment and it finds a lot of muscles that are not getting hit when you lift.

I took some years ago at a community college. I think it's important to start with a good instructor instead of a video so that you can learn what proper form feels and looks like. Classes in the beginning are definitely worth it. If your instructor doesn't help you or correct your form you should find a different instructor though. I still do yoga but not in a studio. I like Bryan Kest a lot. His Michigan accent (I'm from Michigan and his accent is so thick it bugs even me) I can do without but his workouts are hard and make you feel really tired and relaxed.

I've been doing yoga for six years now and it's an integral part of my fitness plan. I'm much more flexible than other guys I work out around who are 10-15 years younger, and in terms of squats, flyes, and all kinds of shoulder work, I get a payoff. I've never even seen a yoga video, but I've had 5 different instructors for at least 10 classes (takes awhile to find their interests and abilities to teach); I've learned new stuff from all of them. If I can't get to a yoga class once a week then I make the time to do an hour on my own. It's also so much about balance and core work that I benefit there too. The single most worthwhile thing I do at the gym.

great input. it seems like there are only benefits from yoga...and i guess its not just for women anymore either?
I'm starting to look around in my area for classes, to see what is offered. What would you guys say are good prices to be looking at?

some places seem more than others....what should I be looking for?
