Default Holiday Tips:Healthy Levels for the Holidays

You're surrounded by tempting foods during the holiday season, but it's still important to eat healthy and monitor your glucose levels.

During the holidays, when it's easy to eat more than usual, you might be wondering if you should increase the amount of medication you take in order to keep your blood glucose levels under control.

Unlike insulin therapy — where the amount of insulin can be adjusted to match the portion of carbohydrates you eat — it is difficult to determine how to adjust an oral medication.

Trying to increase the dosage of your oral diabetes medication without your doctor's input could cause low blood glucose.

A better idea would be to try to stick to your meal plan as much as possible, and increase the frequency of your blood glucose testing to detect any significant elevations in your blood glucose levels before you have a serious reaction.

If you're concerned about keeping your diet and glucose levels in check, ask your doctor for help developing a strategy for facing holiday meals and temptations without jeopardizing your health.
