Default How high is high???

I am diagnosed as diabetic type 2 but at the moment 'diet controlled'. My blood sugar when I wake up is always around 7.1/7.4 and rarely varies.
After my main meal at night it seems to shoot to about 13.0 or 14.0 but in the morning it is back down to 7ish again.
My diabetic nurse wants to put me on Metformin. I am worried as I have lots of other health problems and already rattle with tablets and dont really want any more.
She says I should average 5 or 6. On occasions when I have tested 5.0 ish I really havent felt well - more lightheaded. At 7 or even up to 13 or 14 I feel absolutely fine.
Advice?
