OK, I'm here hoping to get some answers I can't find on any diabetes info sites.
If you have type 2 diabetes, are you guaranteed to develop type 1 eventually?
My partner was diagnosed with type 2 about 2.5 years ago, and we have been pleased that he didn't require any change to his medication after the first 12 months. He has now been called back following a blood test and we guess his medication will be increased. He is feeling quite low at this, because he feels it's a step closer to insulin therapy, which he dreads. I have tried to reassure him that, having only been on 1 gliclazide and 2 metformin per day since diagnosis, he is still on very low levels of medication.
His weight is normal, blood pressure low and cholesterol well managed (from over 11 at diagnosis down to 4 now). He is 51, of mostly afro caribbean background. His mother also has diabetes (and we suspect his grandfather's blindness and early death was a result of the undiagnosed condition in the late 40s/early 50s)
Can anyone elighten me on whether type 2 always develops into type 1 and how the condition would be expected to progress for someone like him.
