Default questions re. bs after intense exercise and coping with hunger

I had gestational diabetes which I controlled with a strict low GI diet. Once the baby was born all returned to normal - but my sugars have soared recently and I am retesting.
Can anyone explain why my sugar readings go up after intense exercise?
This morning I tested and had a reading of 9.2 (had snacked on low GI biscuit at one am.) had 2 pieces of low GI toast and porridge at 8am - played a tough game of hockey at midday - had two apples and two cups of tea with semi skimmed milk after the game( I couldn't eat the match teas!) and at 4.30pm, when I retested, I had a reading of 11.
Can missing meals and intense exercise push sugars up?
I would appreciate any advice.
I am also constantly hungry, is this to be expected ? I am still breast feeding.
