Default Dating and Facebook/Social Networking Sites

I chanced upon an intereting article today . Im in full agreement in with this article which was printed nationally today . I feel its good tosometimes get something off ones chest or vent now and again but must be kept in check as not to do it too much or constantly as it begins to affect mental health, paricularly amongst groups of women. The article as follows ;
As anyone whos shared a house with a teenage girl and a telephone will know, they certainly like to talk !. But chatting too much with their friends can make girls prone to anxiety and depression , a study has found. The opportunity for youngsters to share their problems through texting, email and social networking sites such as Facebook has never been greater. But excessive discussion- known to experts as co-rumination-can be unhelpful. Repeated conversations amongst adolescent girls, particularly about romantic disappointments worsen their mood and create negative emotions.
There is a weath of communicatio technology available to teens today that allows them to talk over and over again about the same issue and emotianal difficulties , texing , instant messaging and social networking make it very easy for adolescents to become more anxious, which can lead to depression.
Teenage friends have always chattedabout their problems, asking each other why a boy didnt call or if they should break up with a boyfriend, But frequently discussing the same problem can intensify into an unhealthy activity for those who use facebook and other electronic means to obess about it.
This article goes on , which i wont type all but you get the general idea . it does say the higher levels of discussing these problems with friendswere "significantly" linkedto higher levels of depression and mental problems. Teenagers and young women often dont realize that excessive talking is actually making them feel a lot worse ! girls spend more time discussing thier personal problemsand the growth of electronic communications can lead to more co-rumination between teenage boys.
years ago we didnt have all this when i was growing up . We had lindline telephones not mobiles (until my early 20's) ...and when we met friends we would spend an hour to half hour chattingabout an issue that got us down but then were too busy carrying on with socializing or having fun happy to see our friends .
Yes im a member of facebook , but theres a general code for us, its not acceptable to instant message with rumours or such..its just to catch up now and agin with old college pals ect ...
I do tend to agree with the above comments ...

We don't allow outbound links on MH, but the name of the source is okay.

@Little: Well then copying and pasting the articel in here should be fine, right?

@hotandwet:
I'd like to read it for myself because some of what it claims seems to me to be absurd. So i'd like to go through and see if maybe you've left some additional information out that might lend their claims some more support.

There is absolutely no reason why talking about something too much will cause depression. Its the depression that causes the talking of it too much in the first place. The more a person talks about it, the more you get to deal with it.

And the counter should be true for positive topics too, these mediums should also then cause an incline in discussion of positive or exciting topics and thus the two should balance eachother out.

I'm afraid not, if it's copyrighted. However, I did just dig up the article and since it was a bit hard to find, I'll post its info so you can find it easily.

I definitely agree with StarkBotha. Airing out grievances and emotions make them easier to deal with.

Yes..ive got the answer in my email so thought id reply to both posters . I actually envisaged *myself* being "challenged" over this post ..but as i did not write the article and it has been viewed its been written by qualified people and been published in the UK . This problem is happening and nobody else im sure is disagreeing with the negativity of co-rumination , except of course those who indulge in this negative activity ..its a fact people recieve treatment in this country for depression by the National Health *free* and can suggest you make further investigations is you tend to disagree with that . Knowing about the country you reside in is important . I reside in the UK im a British citizen ...you may choose to make furhter investigations to challenge or make your point of theres is nothing wrong with co-rumination to the person who wrote the article or write if your courageous enough with your comments on the website ..!! anyone can do that . both of the comments are picking out only small parts of that paragraph ..mental illness as that is called in the UK is rife and it can be caused by co-rumination and constantly obsessing ..thats why people commit suicide ..or end up sectioned or socially outcasts ..the most positve way to be is pleasant , charming , nice to be around and not argumentative ..unless of course there are sections of the community who do sadly like to revel inthier own woes and depressions and are generally miserable rumour mongers ...much left to nasty college girls ..i dont really know any adults here who waste time with that ...but do take it up with the writer it may be an interesting *argument * if you like that sort of thing ...

Text this! you are losing your true identity, if youve neven found it yet . My advice is to be yourself, an individual, with your own special talents. Dont just be a part of the in thing to do crowd ...UNQUOTE

Ive just read the article and its pathetic. They have no proof for their summation and they are of the opinion that depression is "strongly linked" to higher levels of co-rumination (what a stupid word in the first place). Yes, of course its linked, thats because depressed people tend to focus on their issues, anyone who's ever been depressed or known a depressed child will be able to tell you that.

This article only made it to the surface of public media because there are so many anti-tech ignoramuses out there who have hackney opinions based on their own ignorance and nothing more.

The poster who brought it up has been banned anyways for being a dual (or a triple, or a quadruple ... I've lost count) of someone who likes to just stir up trouble and get heated for no good reason.
It's an interesting topic, though. People not involved in the Web 2.0 phenomenon just don't "get it."
