Tips for good parenting

* Spend quality time together. Children need your time and attention to know they are loved.
* Praise your child. Let them know when they are doing something good and it will encourage them to do it again.
* Provide your child with engaging activities. When children have plenty of interesting things to do they don't get bored and there are fewer problems.
* Set a good example. Children learn a lot through watching others. Show your child through your own actions how you would like them to behave.
* Establish ground rules. Make sure your child understands what is expected of them and that you back up rules if they are broken.
* Give clear, calm instructions. Children are more co-operative when you speak to them nicely and they understand what is being said.
* Ignore minor misbehaviour. Some misbehaviour is best dealt with by completely ignoring it.
* Manage your own feelings. This can be hard when your child is upset. When you need to discipline children try to remain calm.
* Back up your instructions with appropriate consequences. Back up your words with actions such as removing a troublesome toy, withdrawing a privilege or, in certain instances, use a consequence such as time out.
* Plan ahead. Be prepared — have a plan for what you can do before you get into difficulties.
* Develop routines for your child. Routines help children learn what to do at certain times of the day, such as before school or getting ready for bed.
* If you have a partner, work as a team. Share parenting jobs, agree on discipline and back each other up.
* Don't accidentally reward misbehaviour by giving into demands. It is OK to say "no" to children. When you say no, briefly explain why and stick to your decision.
* Avoid giving too many threats or warnings. Be prepared to act. Don't just threaten to act.
* Take care of yourself. It is easier to be consistent and patient if your own needs are being met and you feel supported as a parent.
* Show affection. You will not spoil your child by showing them you care.
* Get support. Every parent needs support with parenting from time to time. It's OK to seek help if you need it.
